Welcome to the Center for Canadian Studies at Duke University located in the John Hope Franklin Center on 2204 Erwin Road in Durham, NC.

Duke has a strong tradition in Canadian Studies dating back more than three decades. Over the years, we have graduated more than 100 PhDs whose work has focused on Canada. Today, these former students teach at leading universities across Canada and the United States.

The study of Canada at Duke began much earlier as part of the Commonwealth Studies Program. On May 12, 1974, Duke President Terry Sanford presented an honorary doctorate to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau and announced that Duke would establish an independent center devoted to the study of Canada.

Over the years, the Center has supported more than 100 Ph.D.s who today teach at leading universities across Canada and the United States. Through its endowment and with additional financial support from the Canadian and Québec Governments, the Center for Canadian Studies organizes film festivals, literary readings, conferences, and lectures. Distinguished academics, Fulbright scholars, government officials, and business leaders visit Duke every year to support the undergraduate and graduate courses focused on Canadian history, politics, economics, public policy, culture, and literature.
