Collaborative South Asia Collections.
In cooperation with the North Carolina Center for South Asia Studies (NCCSAS), the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) agreed to hire a Triangle-wide South Asia bibliographer to coordinate the collection of South Asia materials on the four constituent campuses. This experiment in collaborative collection development involves English, vernacular, and South Asia classical language collections. The research depth collection for South Asia centers on the Duke University core, with more than 230,000 volumes and 6,000 serials in Bengali, English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Pali, Persian, Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. While the four undergraduate collections are developed in parallel with moderate duplication, the responsibility for research depth collecting in the vernaculars has been shared among the four institutions in a unique arrangement. Utilizing a 24-28 hour "Trip Saver" system pioneered at NCSU Libraries, faculty and students from across the Triangle can receive delivery from any of the institutions (extending the simple mutual borrowing agreements among the universities).
South Asia Bibliographers
As part of the agreement on collaborative collecting, Duke University has named Avinash Maheshwary, Avinash_Maheshwary@valhalla.oit.duke.edu, the TRLN South Asia Bibliographer to manage the collections on the four campuses. In addition, Brent Bianchi, Brent.Bianchi@valhalla.oit.duke.edu, has been named the TRLN South Asia Bibliographer Postdoctoral Fellow, supported by the US Department of Education's Title VI Undergraduate National Resource Center held by North Carolina Center for South Asia Studies.
