Imperialist Order Transformed?
Global Perspectives on the Legacies of World War I
March 2 – 4, 2007
Duke University
This conference, organized by the global history network “world orders,” which is co-headed by Sebastian Conrad (Berlin) and Dominic Sachsenmaier (Duke), will address the trans-cultural influences of WW I on different but related levels. For example, some panels discuss the question whether the war indeed marked the end of the “civilizing mission” and of the hegemony of Western style modernity. On the conference agenda are also questions such as in what ways the perceived decline of the imperialist order gave rise to alternative concepts of world order and efforts to build new international institutions. Furthermore, the conference will discuss problems ranging from changing notions of race and bio-politics as well as, more generally, the trans-regional dynamics of certain ideologies during and after the war. The event will bring together leading scholars and experts working on different world regions.
