WRK4US is an international email discussion list on nonacademic careers for people with graduate education in Humanities, Education, and Social Science disciplines.
The list is hosted in the Research Triangle by Duke University's Franklin Humanities Institute in partnership with Duke's Graduate School and Career Center and the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
WRK4US is the premiere email discussion list on nonacademic careers for people with graduate degrees in Humanities, Education and Social science disciplines. It was founded in 1999 by Paula Foster Chambers (pfchambers@sbcglobal.net), who continues to manage the list today with the support and collaboration of Duke University's John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute, Career Center, and Graduate School in partnership with the Graduate School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. WRK4US has over 1,000 subscribers from all over North America.
Most of the time, WRK4US is a regular unmoderated email discussion list, open for freeform discussion. However, several times a year, Paula organizes Guest Speaker Discussions, during which outside speakers join the list for a week to share their experiences with a particular career or issue and answer questions from subscribers. All Guest Speakers have graduate degrees in Humanities, Education or Social Science disciplines and all have forged successful careers outside of the traditional realm of faculty work. Past Guest Speaker Discussions are here.
LIST POLICIES -- VERY IMPORTANT! Any subscriber who consistently violates any of these policies over a period of time despite counseling may be removed from the list and blocked from future subscription.
- CONFIDENTIALITY. Because some academics take a dim view of anyone who seriously considers a nonacademic career, it is important to protect the identities of your fellow subscribers. By subscribing to this list, you agree not to reveal anyone's name or email address and you will not forward posted material off-list without explicit permission from the author. Thank you for making WRK4US a safe place. 2) TONE. The tone of this list is helpful and supportive. Please, no flaming. Disagree graciously and respectfully.
- WHAT TO POST. Do post * thoughts, reflections, questions, etc. about nonacademic careers * helpful, supportive responses to other people's messages * nonacademic job announcements in their entirety, with contact information. We love job postings!
- WHAT NOT TO POST. Do not post * Anything not related to nonacademic careers * irrelevant material such as humor, virus warnings, "chain" emails, college-teaching job announcements * articles in their entirety--please post a brief excerpt or abstract with a link to the whole article.
- TRIM YOUR POSTINGS. When replying to a posting, please remove any long chains of messages beneath your own. This makes it much easier for the people in digest mode to follow the conversation.
- THE PUBLIC NATURE OF GUEST SPEAKER DISCUSSIONS. All Guest Speaker Discussions are edited for confidentiality and posted on the WRK4US website. When you contribute to a Guest Speaker Discussion, you are assumed to understand that your words will eventually wind up on the web for all to see. However, don't worry, your name and email address will be concealed.
