rudy is a media performance collective based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. rudy was formed to create an interdisciplinary approach to art practice that worked within the contemporary convergence of art, entertainment, and information. rudy investigates lived experience in an information-based society; our goal is to push the boundaries of the art experience. rudy is interdisciplinary. The collective includes people from various disciplines such as Theater, Music, and Information Science.
rudy projects address “lived experience” in a technology-based society. Past events include This Day, 2003: insomnia, yoga, prozac (2003). It investigated the role of information technologies in forming cultural and personal narratives. The fragmented, undifferentiated information affects our daily perceptions, and these perceptions and experiences inform the narratives that reflect our understanding of the world. Burned In (2004) explores the impact of information technologies on memory and archiving. Information technologies allow for vast archival possibilities. Burned In focuses on the selection and omission of memories. Events include video projection, live performance, interactivity, sound, and live video mixing
The art world in the 21st century faces questions regarding its role and its meaning situated in an information and media saturated culture. The development of these technologies facilitates the development of new forms of art and new venues for viewing. Today’s artists must re-think their role, responsibility, and practice amidst these cognitive and perceptual shifts while relating their work to larger cultural and social issues. This is the mission of rudy.
