FIRST YEAR

Students interested in ICS have several options for courses during their first year at Duke:

  • Start or continue study of a language appropriate to your area of interest.  In almost all cases ICS requires four semesters of a single language.

  • Take an introductory level (i.e. under 100) course from the approved Global and Comparative courses list, e.g. CulAnth 94, History 76, PolSci 92.

  • Take ICS 125 in the spring semester.  We hold seats in this class for ICS majors and prospective majors.  See the Course Synopsis for 125 for information on how to request a spot.  We may not be able to accommodate all first year students; it is also fine to take this course during the sophomore year.

  • Take a course that focuses on your primary regional interest.  For 100-level courses, it is advisable to check with the course instructor to make sure it is appropriate for first year students.

  • Participate in an internationally oriented FOCUS Program.

In addition to coursework there are several other things that you can do:

  • Start taking advantage of the wealth of international opportunities on campus, e.g. talks and films for more information see the Global Gateway.

  • Join an internationally focused student group, e.g.  Students of the World, Passport.

  • Develop a summer research project and apply for funding.

  • Schedule an informational session with ICS Staff assistant or director, or both – to explore your interests and talk about opportunities.
