Study Abroad

ICS strongly encourages its majors to study abroad for at least one semester. Personal experience with the challenges and rewards of cross-cultural communication provides an invaluable context for ICS coursework.   We also encourage students to consider other abroad opportunities, such as DukeEngage, Students of the World, and the Global Health Program, among a wealth of others.

Funding for independent research projects abroad is available as early as the summer after the first undergraduate year.  ICS gives funding for thesis related research during the summer between junior and senior years.

It is especially valuable for students to direct attention before and after spending time abroad to processing the experience, its significance, and its relationship to the student’s curriculum and goals.  To this end we have developed two half-credit courses intended to bookend the abroad experience – ICS 195 At Home Abroad, and ICS 196 Coming Home.

The abroad experience can greatly enrich a student’s undergraduate education and career path.  See Duke Career Center Director Sheila Curran’s article, Career Advantages of Studying Abroad.

Credit for Courses Taken Abroad
All regular Duke courses taken while studying abroad that are listed as ICS courses in the Bulletin do count toward meeting ICS requirements.  In the case of transfer credits obtained from study abroad on a non-Duke program, up to three courses per semester can be counted toward satisfying requirements for the major.  Approval inthis case must be obtained from the one of the directors, after individual courses have been approved by the DUS of the department in which they are offered.
