Vicente L. Rafael is Professor of History at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is the author of Contracting Colonialism; White Love and Other Events in Filipino History; and most recently, The Promise of the Foreign: Nationalism and the Technics of Translation in the Spanish Philippines, all published by Duke University Press. He has also written essays on translation and war, the uses of cell phones in social movements, and is currently at work on the relationship between sovereignty and revolution in Filipino history.
