B&W Printing with JHFC B/W copier
The 1st Floor B/W printer in the Franklin Center is capable of printing myriad ways. The instructions below should provide a good introduction to some of its capabilities. Two initial steps are required for changing print preferences for both printers.
skip over first 2 Steps & jump to Two- Sided Printing
skip over first 2 Steps & jump to 81/2 x 11 inch booklet printing
skip over first 2 Steps & jump to 51/2 x 81/2 inch booklet printing
Step 1:
The printer's options are set in the print dialogue
box within the application you are printing from. To the left you
can see the first step for printing: file > print .
Alternatively, Print Preview will preview the document and allow one to set printing properties.
Step 2

The next dialogue box (see at right) offers a variety of options for printing. This box is the same as the one you see when printing to the color printer. Choose Properties from the next window.

Two sided printing:
NOTE: The settings to change for Stapling or Hole Punching are the same for two-sided as they are for single sided printing.
- To begin, after clicking on Properties,
choose Finishing as illustrated below.
- The Finishing box allows a number of settings to be
changed. The printers in the Franklin Center will default to printing
on one side. To change that choose 2-sided Printing as
shown below. Note that the default for two sided printing is Collate,
also shown below. Therefore the default 2-sided Printing is to
print without a
staple.

- Now you can choose to set printing preferences to Staple and/or Hole Punch the document. To Staple the document, follow the instructions below. To punch holes in the document, jump to Step 5, Hole Punch. Again, these settings are the same for two-sided and single sided printing. The default staple location is the top left corner of the document, except when printing Landscape (then it istop right).

- Choosing Staple Position will allow you to change the location of the staple(s) in the document, as illustrated below.
PLEASE NOTE: Only change this setting if you are sure you want to change the default (and most common) place to staple the document. If you don't want to change the default staple position, go to Step 6 .
The default location is selected in the Staple Position window, shown at right.
The window will visually show you where the staple will go.
As the text suggests, selecting Lower Left changes the staple position of the staple to the lower left of the document. After clicking OK at the bottom of the window you will return you to the Printing Properties panel. From there proceed to Step 6 .
And again, as the text suggests, selecting Left (Double) will put two staples on the left hand side of the document. After clicking OK at the bottom of the window you will return you to the Printing Properties panel. From there proceed to Step 6
- Choose Hole Punch as illustrated below. The Printer will punch three holes in the document to prepare it for placement in a three ring binder.

- To finish setting preferences and Print the document:
Choose OK in the JHFC B/W Copier Preferences (a.) to finish setting preferences and OK in the Print (b.) Window again to print the document, as illustrated below.
a. Choose OK in the JHFC B/W Copier Preferences window
b. Choose OK in the Print window
81/2 x 11 Inch Booklet Printing:
Booklet Printing is effective for documents that are around 40 pages or less. Beyond that size the JHFC B/W Copier has problems effectively folding the stack of papers and may not put a staple in them. After choosing properties, as before (see Step 1 and Step 2 above), follow these steps:
- After choosing Printing Preferences from Step 2 you will encounter the same dialogue window as before. Choose 11x17 from the Output Size setting. This will print 2 pages of the 81/2x11 document onto 1 side of a sheet of 11x17 paper (as well as printing 4 pages of the document onto both sides of the 11x17 paper).

- Next select Finishing then Booklet Printing as indicated below. Note that on the left side of the panel the picture and the designation "Letter -> 11x17" indicating the what the output will be.

- At this point the Copier would print your document double sided on folded 11x17 inch sheets of paper, forming a booklet (hence the name). Choosing Saddle Stitch (see below) will nicely place two staples along the spine of your booklet. Note that on the left side of the panel the picture and the designation "Letter x2 -> 11x17" indicating the what the output will be.

- Clicking OK will return you to the Printing Properties panel and from there you can choose OK to finish setting preferences and OK again to print the document, as stated in Step 6 above.
51/2 x 81/2 Inch Booklet Printing:
When creating small booklets it is important to set the correct font size, usually larger than the 10-12 points. The whole document will shrink by a factor of around 2, so trying a couple of test pages is prudent. Small booklet printing compresses two pages of a document onto one 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper, rotating the document to landscape orientation, folding and also collating the whole document properly.
Again be aware that booklet printing is only effective for documents that are approximately 40 pages or less.
Choose Finishing from the top tabs. To create a small booklet choose Booklet as illustrated below. Notice that in the preview window it displays the Letter x 2 > Letter, indicating that two full pages will be shrunk and placed on one.

- At this point the Copier would print your document double sided on folded 51/2 x 81/2 inch sheets of paper, forming a booklet (hence the name). Choosing Saddle Stitch (see below) will nicely place two staples along the spine of your booklet. Choosing OK will finish the properties setting and then OK again will print the document.
